葛飾北斎

By Katsushika Hokusai (1760~1849)

``Shokoku Waterfalls'',

a collection of eight pictures of famous places,

is said to have been published around 1833,

after ``Thirty-six Views of Mt. Fuji'' was published.

It is a masterpiece and a masterpiece among

Hokusai's landscape prints,

and is an ambitious work that challenges

the expression of ``water'' using famous waterfalls

from all over Japan such as Edo,

Nikko, Kiso, and Tokaido as subject matter.

This work can be said to embody Hokusai's artistic

pursuit of depicting the essence of a motif

from a unique perspective.
