This cloisonné plate is a magnificent ornament to have at home. Both the deer and the Momiji (Japanese Maple) tree are symbols of Nara, and are certain to bring back warm memories to anyone who visited Nara park, and saw the deer roaming freely outside Todai-ji temple. The choice of Nara's symbols also speaks to this old enamel tradition of Japanese craft, which dates back to the Nara period (7th-8th century).
