*Kinsai* (Gold Decoration) is a traditional Arita ware style characterized by a multi-stage process: underglaze painting followed by firing at 1,300°C; overglaze painting using traditional Arita pigments (incorporating colors such as red, green, blue, and yellow) followed by firing at 800°C; and finally, the application of gold patterns for decoration. Because the piece is fired once for each color applied, the creation of a single work involves five to ten separate firings. It is a magnificent and dignified style that combines brilliant gold decoration with inventive color schemes and layouts.
*Somenishiki Platinum-sai* (Underglaze Blue & Overglaze Enamel with Platinum) is a unique technique developed by Kinsai Fujii, in which platinum accents are applied to white porcelain—previously fired at 1,300°C—and then fired again at 800°C to bond the platinum to the surface. The process involves firing the piece once for each color used (totaling six to ten firings) before the final platinum firing. The platinum applied across the surface creates subtle nuances of light and shadow; its luster shifts depending on the angle of the light and the viewer's perspective, ensuring a constant, radiant gleam. It is a luxurious style that fuses the traditions of Arita ware with a modern sensibility.
Carp
In China, there is a legend that a carp ascending the "Dragon Gate" waterfall in the rapids of the Yellow River transforms into a dragon; consequently, the carp is revered as a symbol of great leaps forward and career success. This concept was adopted in Japan, and from the late Edo period onward, *koinobori* (carp streamers) came to be flown during the Tango no Sekku festival to pray for children's healthy growth and future success. Carp motifs have long been cherished and utilized in a wide variety of art forms, including *makie* lacquerware and ceramics. With its noble beauty, the carp is a highly auspicious and popular design motif.
