"Kinsai" (gold decoration) is a traditional Arita ware style characterized by a multi-stage creation process. It begins with underglaze painting followed by firing at 1,300°C; next, traditional Arita overglaze enamels (red, green, blue, yellow, etc.) are applied and fired at 800°C; finally, gold accents are added to create patterns and decorative details. Because the piece is fired after the application of each color, the entire process involves five to ten separate firings. The result is a magnificent, dignified style that combines brilliant gold decoration with inventive color schemes and layouts.

This piece utilizes a distinctive green glaze known as *Ryokusai-yu*. Unlike painted pigments, the green hue—derived from copper oxide within the glaze—possesses a rich, profound depth. Furthermore, the glaze underwent transformation during the reduction firing process, creating unique variations in flow and color—a "beauty born of chance" that can be appreciated in this work.

The dragon is a mythical creature believed to be a divine beast of the heavens; it is said to inhabit the waters, soar through the air upon clouds, and wield supernatural power. Ranked alongside the tortoise, *qilin* (kirin), and phoenix as one of the "Four Auspicious Beasts," the dragon held special significance in China. From the Yuan Dynasty onward, "dragon motifs" adorned the robes of the Emperor and were strictly prohibited for use outside the imperial court. In Japan, too, the dragon has been cherished since the Heian and Kamakura periods, appearing in a wide variety of designs across paintings, ceramics, and other art forms. It is considered an auspicious motif that invites career advancement, rising fortune, and business success, while also offering protection against all manner of calamities.
