*Sometsuke* refers to ware decorated with patterns in a single blue color. This style originated in Arita ware 400 years ago. The process involves applying an underglaze design—using pigments (*gosu*) composed of materials such as cobalt oxide, manganese, iron, and kaolin—onto the raw porcelain body; a transparent glaze is then applied over the design before firing, causing the pigment to develop a blue hue. The shade of blue varies depending on the amount of cobalt oxide used, the glaze, the porcelain clay, and the firing method—ranging from vivid indigo to pale tones or deep, dark-tinged hues. Appreciating these subtle variations and the unique character of the color is one of the true pleasures of *sometsuke*. Introduced to Arita via China and the Korean Peninsula, the style is characterized by its elegance and beauty, combining the warmth of white porcelain with single-color blue decoration.

The dragon is a mythical creature believed to be a divine beast belonging to the celestial realm; it is said to inhabit the waters, soar through the air on clouds, and possess supernatural power. Along with the tortoise, *qilin* (kirin), and phoenix, it is counted among the "Four Auspicious Beasts." In China, starting from the Yuan Dynasty, the "dragon motif" was reserved for the attire of the Emperor and was forbidden for use outside the imperial court. Dragons have also been cherished in Japan since the Heian and Kamakura periods, with their motifs appearing in a wide variety of designs, including paintings and ceramics. It is considered an auspicious pattern that invites career advancement, rising fortune, and the growth and success of business ventures, while also offering protection against all manner of calamities.
