The dragon is a mythical creature believed to be a divine beast of the heavens; it is said to possess supernatural power, dwelling in water and soaring through the air upon the clouds. Ranked alongside the tortoise, *qilin* (kirin), and phoenix as one of the "Four Auspicious Beasts," the dragon held special significance in China. From the Yuan Dynasty onward, the "dragon motif" adorned the robes of the Emperor and was restricted from use outside the imperial court. In Japan, too, the dragon has been cherished since the Heian and Kamakura periods, with its motif appearing in a wide variety of designs, including paintings and ceramics.
