*Sometsuke* (blue-and-white ware) is a technique in which a design is painted onto a porcelain body using *gosu*—a pigment primarily composed of cobalt oxide—before a transparent glaze is applied and the piece is fired at high temperatures to produce a deep, beautiful indigo hue. Originating in Arita ware approximately four hundred years ago, this style has evolved into one of Japan's most iconic forms of ceramic decoration. The shade of indigo varies subtly depending on factors such as the cobalt oxide mixture, the glaze, the porcelain clay, and firing conditions, resulting in a diverse range of expressions—from vivid blue and soft, pale indigo to a rich, evocative deep indigo. Appreciating these delicate nuances in color and the unique character they impart is a major part of the appeal of *sometsuke*.

The cranes and tortoises depicted on the plate are auspicious creatures symbolizing longevity and prosperity—embodying the traditional Japanese saying that "cranes live a thousand years and tortoises ten thousand." Their elegant forms have long been cherished by the Japanese people and featured in the designs of various traditional crafts, including *maki-e* lacquerware, textiles, and ceramics. As auspicious motifs representing family harmony, longevity, and prosperity, they lend a sense of prestige and refinement suitable for celebratory occasions and gifts.

The background features Mount Fuji, Japan’s iconic and majestic peak. Towering over the border between Shizuoka and Yamanashi prefectures, it is the highest mountain in Japan and has long been an object of spiritual reverence and admiration. Designated a World Cultural Heritage site in 2013, it is globally recognized as a symbol of Japanese culture. Since ancient times, Mount Fuji has been revered as an emblem of good fortune, prosperity, and luck, cherished as an auspicious design that captures the heart of Japan.

This piece—featuring the crane and tortoise (symbols of longevity and prosperity) alongside Mount Fuji (an icon of Japan)—is rendered in the beautiful indigo hues of *sometsuke* (blue-and-white underglaze painting). It is a distinguished work of art that embodies the history and aesthetic sensibility of Arita ware. It makes a prized addition to any collection and is highly appreciated as a gift for occasions such as longevity celebrations, housewarmings, and commemorative events. Furthermore, thanks to its elegant beauty and motifs that epitomize Japanese culture, it is a popular choice for international recipients and as a souvenir from Japan, cherished worldwide as a masterpiece that conveys the beauty of Japanese tradition.
