Old Imari Style
Ceramics fired in the Hizen region (modern-day Saga and Nagasaki prefectures) from the late 17th to the late 18th century were exported to Europe via the port of Imari. Consequently, these ceramics came to be known both domestically and internationally as "Imari ware" (or "Old Imari") after the port's name. Characterized by deep blue underglaze, lavish use of red and gold pigments, and intricate floral patterns covering the entire surface, this style is thought to reflect the prosperous spirit of the Genroku era. Hizen ceramics exported to Europe were prized and displayed in royal palaces and aristocratic mansions. The elegant, magnificent style that captivated 17th-century Europe remains beloved today and endures as a representative style of Arita ware.
Cranes
Along with the tortoise, the crane has long been revered as an auspicious creature—symbolized by the saying "cranes live a thousand years, tortoises ten thousand"—and is regarded as a bird of longevity. In China, legend holds that the deity of longevity, Jurojin, rode a crane to summon the Eight Immortals. In Japan, too, the crane is cherished for its elegance, and its motif appears in a wide variety of forms, including *maki-e* lacquerware and ceramics. As a magnificent pattern suited for celebrations, it is considered highly auspicious—symbolizing military victory, family harmony, and longevity—and conveys a sense of grace and nobility.
Pine, Bamboo, and Plum (*Sho-chiku-bai*)
The pine and bamboo, which retain their green foliage even amidst wind, snow, and bitter cold, and the plum, which blooms earlier than other plants, are revered as symbols of longevity, integrity, and purity. The pine represents enduring vitality; the bamboo signifies steadfastness and nobility; and the plum is celebrated for its pure fragrance and refined elegance. Long used in a wide array of designs—from decorative objects to ceramics—this magnificent motif is considered a symbol of good fortune and is perfect for celebratory occasions. *Seigaiha* (Blue Ocean Waves) is a geometric pattern featuring waves depicted in a fan-like shape and layered in an alternating arrangement. Admired by all for its perfected beauty as a traditional design, it has frequently appeared on Iro-Nabeshima and Ko-Imari ceramics. It is an auspicious pattern that embodies the wish for a peaceful life to continue forever—much like the ceaseless waves rolling across the vast, boundless ocean.
