The process begins with underglaze painting followed by firing at 1,300°C; subsequently, traditional Arita overglaze enamels are applied, and the piece is fired again at 800°C. Because a separate firing is required for each color applied, the creation of a single piece involves anywhere from four to ten firing cycles. The *Somenishiki* style (including *Iro-Nabeshima*) originated around 1675, initially produced for castle furnishings and as presentation gifts for the Shogunate, feudal lords, and the Imperial Court. Prized since ancient times for their elegant appearance, irises have frequently been depicted in *Iro-Nabeshima* and *Ko-Imari* (Old Imari) wares.
