**Carp (Koi)**

In China, it is said that a carp that swims up the "Dragon's Gate" waterfall—located in the rapids of the Yellow River—transforms into a dragon; consequently, the carp is revered as a symbol of great strides and success in life. This concept spread to Japan, and from the late Edo period onwards, *koinobori* (carp streamers) came to be flown during the Tango no Sekku festival to pray for children's healthy growth and future success. Carp motifs have long been cherished and utilized across a wide range of mediums, including *makie* lacquerware and ceramics. With its noble beauty, the carp is a highly popular, auspicious motif considered to bring good fortune.

**Seigaiha (Blue Ocean Waves)**

This is a geometric pattern featuring wave shapes arranged in a fan-like form and layered in an alternating, overlapping manner. Its perfected beauty as a traditional pattern appeals to everyone, and it has frequently appeared in works of Iro-Nabeshima and Ko-Imari porcelain. It is an auspicious motif that embodies the wish for a peaceful life to continue forever, much like the ceaseless waves of the vast, boundless ocean.

*Somenishiki* is a traditional Arita ware style characterized by the incorporation of colors such as red, green, blue, and yellow. The process begins with underglaze blue painting followed by glazing and firing at 1,300°C; subsequently, traditional Arita overglaze enamels are applied, and the piece is fired again at 800°C. Because the piece is fired after the application of each color, the creation of a single work involves anywhere from four to ten separate firings. This style—also known as *Iro-Nabeshima*—originated around 1675, with pieces initially crafted as furnishings for the castle and as gifts for the Shogunate, feudal lords, and the Imperial Court; these techniques and traditions continue to be preserved to this day.
