Because the piece is fired after the application of each color, the creation of a single work involves anywhere from four to ten separate firings. *Somenishiki* (specifically the *Iro-Nabeshima* style) originated around 1675, initially produced for castle furnishings and as presentation gifts for the Shogunate, feudal lords, and the Imperial Court.
