*Sometsuke* refers to ware decorated with patterns in a single blue color; this style originated in Arita ware 400 years ago. The process involves painting an underglaze design onto the porcelain body using a pigment known as *gosu*—composed of materials such as cobalt oxide, manganese, iron, and kaolin—and then applying a transparent glaze before firing, which causes the design to turn blue. The shade of blue varies depending on the amount of cobalt oxide used, the glaze, the porcelain clay, and the firing method; the resulting colors range from vivid indigo to pale hues or deep, dark-tinged tones. Appreciating these subtle variations and the unique character of the color is one of the true pleasures of *sometsuke*. Introduced to Arita via China and the Korean Peninsula, the style is characterized by an elegant beauty, combining the warmth of white porcelain with the simplicity of blue-only decoration.
**Crane**
Along with the turtle, the crane has long been revered as an auspicious creature—symbolized by the saying "cranes live a thousand years, turtles ten thousand"—and is considered a bird of longevity. In Chinese legend, the deity of longevity (Shou Lao Ren) is said to have ridden a crane to invite the Eight Immortals. In Japan, too, the crane is cherished for its elegance, and its motif appears in a wide variety of forms, including *maki-e* lacquerware and ceramics. It is a splendid pattern suitable for celebrations and highly auspicious, symbolizing military victory, family harmony, and longevity; it conveys a sense of grace and nobility.
**Pine, Bamboo, and Plum**
