"Somenishiki Platinum-iro" (Underglaze-painted Brocade with Platinum Accents) is a unique technique developed by Kinsai Fujii. It involves applying platinum decoration over white porcelain that has already been fired at 1,300°C, followed by a final firing at 800°C to bond the platinum. The piece undergoes multiple firings—typically six to ten rounds—with each color applied and fired individually before the platinum is finally set. The platinum applied across the surface creates subtle nuances of light and shadow; its luster shifts depending on the angle of the light and the viewer's perspective, ensuring a constant, radiant gleam. It is a luxurious style that fuses the traditions of Arita ware with a modern sensibility.
"Tenmoku" refers to a type of black glaze. The name originates from the tea bowls used in temples on Mount Tianmu (Tenmoku-san) in Zhejiang Province, China; Japanese Zen monks who traveled to China during the Kamakura period brought these bowls back home, and they came to be known in Japan as "Tenmoku" after the mountain. Eschewing ostentatious beauty in favor of a profound, mysterious world of deep black, Tenmoku ware is highly prized in the realm of the tea ceremony.
Dragon
The dragon is an imaginary creature believed to be a divine beast belonging to the celestial realm; it is said to inhabit the waters, soar through the air on clouds, and possess supernatural power. Along with the tortoise, qilin, and phoenix, it is counted among the "Four Auspicious Beasts." In China, starting from the Yuan Dynasty, dragon motifs adorned the robes of the Emperor and were restricted from use outside the imperial court. Dragons have also been cherished in Japan since the Heian and Kamakura periods, with their motifs appearing in a wide variety of designs, including paintings and ceramics. The dragon is considered an auspicious symbol said to bring success in career and business, invite good fortune, and protect people from all manner of calamity.
