This decorative plate features a sophisticated platinum-leaf design set against a backdrop of deep, serene black Tenmoku glaze. A bold wave pattern sweeps across the background, over which a koi carp swims with majestic grace. The motifs of the waves and the koi are rendered in relief; the interplay of light and shadow creates a sense of profound depth and rich character. The harmony between stillness and motion evokes a fleeting moment of nature captured upon the water's surface.

"Tenmoku" refers to a type of black glaze originating from Mount Tianmu in China, introduced to Japan by Zen monks during the Kamakura period. Its deep black hue embodies a refined elegance—understated yet exceptional—and has long been revered as a supreme symbol of beauty in the world of the tea ceremony. In this piece, that mysterious, deep black anchors the composition, harmonizing exquisitely with the brilliant gleam of the platinum.

The koi motif draws upon the Chinese legend of the "Dragon Gate" (Toryumon), where a carp that swims up a raging torrent transforms into a dragon; thus, it symbolizes career advancement, great strides, and success. In Japan, too, the koi is a beloved auspicious symbol—famously seen in the *koinobori* (carp streamers) of the Tango no Sekku festival—representing wishes for healthy growth and prosperity. The image of the koi powerfully surging over the waves embodies hope for the future and resilient strength.

This piece serves not only as a distinguished decorative accent for an alcove (*tokonoma*), entryway, reception room, or living area, but also as a valuable work of art that embodies traditional Japanese aesthetics. Its dignified presence brings a quiet sense of wonder to the viewer, enriching daily life with moments of serenity.

A masterpiece that distills the essence of traditional Japanese craftsmanship, this plate makes a delightful gift for recipients both in Japan and abroad. We hope it will be cherished for years to come as a piece that conveys Japanese culture and aesthetic sensibility.
