*Kinsai* (gold decoration) is a traditional Arita ware style characterized by intricate gold ornamentation. The process begins with underglaze painting followed by a 1,300°C firing; next, traditional Arita overglaze enamels (red, green, blue, yellow, etc.) are applied and fired at 800°C; finally, gold patterns are added and fired once more. Because the piece is fired after the application of each color, the creation process involves five to ten separate firings. The result is a magnificent, dignified style that combines brilliant gold accents with inventive color schemes and layouts.
*Somenishiki-Platinum* is a unique technique developed by Kinsai Fujii, involving the application of platinum accents onto white porcelain (previously fired at 1,300°C) and a subsequent firing at 800°C to bond the platinum. The piece undergoes firing after each color application—totaling six to ten firings—with the platinum applied and fired in the final stage. The platinum applied across the surface creates subtle nuances of light and shadow; its luster shifts depending on the angle of the light and the viewer's perspective, ensuring a constant, radiant sparkle. It is a luxurious style that fuses Arita ware tradition with a modern sensibility.
Dragon
The dragon is a mythical creature believed to be a divine beast belonging to the celestial realm; it is said to inhabit the waters, soar through the air on clouds, and possess supernatural power. Ranked alongside the tortoise, *qilin*, and phoenix as one of the "Four Auspicious Beasts," the dragon held special significance in China. From the Yuan Dynasty onwards, the "dragon motif" was reserved for the Emperor's attire and was strictly prohibited for use outside the imperial court. Cherished in Japan since the Heian and Kamakura periods, the dragon motif is a beloved design featured across a wide range of media, including paintings and ceramics. It is considered an auspicious pattern said to invite career advancement, rising fortune, and business success, while also protecting people from all manner of misfortune.
