"Somenishiki Platinum-Irodori" is a unique technique developed by Kinsai Fujii. It involves applying platinum accents to white porcelain that has already been fired at 1,300°C, followed by a subsequent firing at 800°C to bond the platinum to the surface. The piece undergoes multiple firings—typically six to ten rounds—as each color is applied individually, with the platinum firing serving as the final step. The platinum applied across the surface creates subtle nuances of light and shadow; its luster shifts depending on the angle of the light and the viewer's perspective, ensuring a constant, radiant sparkle. This luxurious style harmoniously blends the traditions of Arita ware with a modern aesthetic.
"Kinsai" (Gold Decoration) is a traditional Arita ware style characterized by its opulent use of gold. The process begins by glazing and firing the piece at 1,300°C, followed by painting with traditional Arita colored enamels (such as red, green, blue, and yellow) and firing again at 800°C. Finally, gold is applied to create decorative patterns. Because each color requires a separate firing, a single piece may undergo five to ten firing cycles before completion. It is a magnificent and dignified style that incorporates brilliant gold decoration alongside inventive color schemes and layouts.
Dragon
The dragon is a mythical creature revered as a divine beast of the heavens; it is said to inhabit the waters, soar through the air on clouds, and possess supernatural power. Along with the tortoise, *qilin* (kirin), and phoenix, it is counted among the "Four Auspicious Beasts." In China, starting from the Yuan Dynasty, the dragon motif was reserved exclusively for the Emperor's imperial robes and was forbidden for use outside the court. In Japan, the dragon has been cherished since the Heian and Kamakura periods, appearing frequently in diverse designs across paintings, ceramics, and other art forms. It is considered an auspicious motif that invites career advancement, rising fortune, and business success, while also offering protection against all manner of calamities.
