The treasure of the highest quality
This piece, created in the "Kinrande-style underglaze-color" technique, represents the culmination of the artist's accumulated skills—achieved only after countless trials and errors to perfect its intricate designs and distinctive luster. Its greatest appeal lies in the original technique developed by Kinsai Fujii. While traditional overglaze porcelain painting involves firing pigments onto a previously glazed and fired surface, this work employs a unique "underglaze-color" method that allows vibrant hues to emerge from beneath a transparent glaze, resulting in a flawless, radiant porcelain surface. The artist masterfully employs subtle tonal shifts and a distinctive "gradation" (soft-focus) technique; by eschewing hard outlines and instead using varying color densities to softly blend forms, he creates a sense of depth and shading. Furthermore, the piece is finished with intricate detailing using matte gold accents over the lustrous porcelain surface—extending even to the base (foot) of the vase—a testament to the immense time, effort, and refined craftsmanship involved in its creation. The contrast between the deep, luminous sheen of the porcelain and the matte gold creates an atmosphere of indescribable elegance and commanding presence. It is a masterpiece highly prized as a gift for distinguished guests from around the world.
Mount Fuji—Japan's highest peak—towers over the border between Shizuoka and Yamanashi prefectures. With its summit rising far above the clouds, Mount Fuji is a symbol of Japan and has long been cherished by the Japanese people as a spiritual home. Registered as a World Heritage Site in 2013, it is widely recognized internationally as an iconic mountain representing Japan and its culture. It is regarded as a deeply auspicious symbol—an omen of good fortune and luck—and serves as a propitious motif that embodies the very spirit of Japan.
Along with the tortoise, the crane has long been revered as an auspicious creature; the saying "cranes live a thousand years, tortoises ten thousand" reflects its status as a symbol of longevity. In Chinese tradition, it is said that Jurojin (the God of Longevity) rode a crane to summon the Eight Immortals. In Japan, the elegant crane is a beloved motif, frequently incorporated into designs for *maki-e* lacquerware, ceramics, and a wide array of other crafts. With its splendid appearance—perfect for celebratory occasions—it serves as an auspicious symbol of victory, family harmony, and longevity, embodying both grace and nobility.
Works created in the *kinrande* (gold-brocade style) with underglaze gold decoration require immense time and effort; consequently, only about ten pieces are produced annually, making each one a rare, one-of-a-kind masterpiece of the highest quality.
The gold decoration in this *kinrande* style utilizes a technique known as *yūri-kinsai* (underglaze gold decoration), in which the gold is covered with a thin layer of transparent glaze before firing; this ensures the gold will not peel, fade, or discolor over time.
While we invite you to admire the deep luster of the underglaze decoration and the intricate gold patterns, please note that the linework is exceptionally fine and delicate, and the painting is incredibly detailed throughout; as a result, certain areas may not be fully visible in the images due to light reflection. Additionally, please understand that the actual colors may appear slightly different depending on your computer's display settings.
