This piece, created in the "Kinrande-style underglaze-color" technique, represents the culmination of the artist's accumulated skills—achieved only after countless trials and errors to perfect its intricate designs and distinctive luster. Its greatest appeal lies in the original technique developed by Kinsai Fujii. While traditional overglaze porcelain painting involves firing pigments onto a previously glazed and fired surface, this work employs a unique "underglaze-color" method that allows vivid hues to emerge from beneath a transparent glaze, resulting in a flawless, radiant porcelain surface. The artist masterfully employs subtle tonal shifts and a distinctive "gradation" (soft-focus) technique; by eschewing hard outlines and instead using varying color intensities to softly blend forms, he creates a sense of depth and shading. Furthermore, the piece is finished with intricate detailing using matte gold accents over the lustrous porcelain surface—extending the decoration even to the base (foot ring)—a process demanding immense time, effort, and refined craftsmanship. The contrast between the deep luster of the porcelain and the matte gold creates an indescribably elegant and commanding presence. It is a masterpiece highly prized as a gift for visiting dignitaries from around the world.
The dragon is a mythical creature revered as a divine beast of the heavens; believed to possess supernatural power, it dwells in water and soars through the skies riding the clouds. Ranked among the "Four Auspicious Creatures"—alongside the tortoise, qilin, and phoenix—the dragon held special significance in China; from the Yuan Dynasty onward, dragon motifs adorned the robes of the Emperor and were strictly prohibited for use outside the imperial court. In Japan, too, the dragon has been cherished since the Heian and Kamakura periods, appearing frequently in paintings, ceramics, and various other art forms. It is considered an auspicious motif that invites career advancement, rising fortune, and business success, while also offering protection against all manner of calamities. Due to the immense time and effort required to create pieces in the *yūrisai kinrande* (underglaze-decorated gold brocade style), only about ten are produced annually; each is a rare, one-of-a-kind masterpiece of the highest quality.
The gold decoration utilizes the *yūri-kinsai* (underglaze gold) technique, in which the gold is covered with a thin layer of transparent glaze before firing; consequently, the gold finish is protected against peeling, fading, and discoloration.
We invite you to admire the deep luster of the underglaze decoration and the intricate gold brocade-style patterns. However, because the line work is exceptionally fine and delicate—featuring meticulous painting throughout—certain details may not be fully captured in the images due to light reflection.
