This piece is created using a unique technique known as *yūrisai* (underglaze polychrome), which allows vibrant colors to emerge from beneath a transparent glaze, resulting in a flawless, radiant porcelain surface. The work employs subtle tonal shifts and a distinctive "soft-focus" (*bokashi*) technique; rather than using sharp outlines, the artist renders the subject and its shading by modulating the intensity of the colors themselves, creating a gentle, diffused effect. The entire piece—including the base—is meticulously hand-painted, combining the lustrous porcelain surface with matte gold accents; its completion demands immense time, effort, and highly refined craftsmanship. The interplay between the deep, glowing luster of the porcelain and the matte gold creates an exquisite elegance and a commanding presence. It is a masterpiece highly prized as a gift for visiting dignitaries from around the world.
The dragon is a mythical creature revered as a divine beast of the heavens; believed to possess supernatural power, it dwells in water and soars through the air riding upon the clouds. Ranked alongside the tortoise, *qilin*, and phoenix as one of the "Four Auspicious Creatures," the dragon held special significance in China; from the Yuan Dynasty onward, dragon motifs adorned the robes of the Emperor and were strictly reserved for imperial use. In Japan, too, the dragon has been cherished since the Heian and Kamakura periods, appearing in a wide array of designs across paintings, ceramics, and other art forms. It is considered an auspicious motif that invites career advancement, rising fortune, and business success, while also offering protection against all manner of calamity.
Because works in the *yūrisai* and *kinrande* (gold-brocade style) require such extensive time and labor, only about ten pieces are produced annually, making each one a rare, one-of-a-kind masterpiece of the highest quality. The gold decoration in the *Kinrande* style is created using the *yūri-kinsai* (gold-under-glaze) technique, in which the gold is covered with a thin layer of transparent glaze and fired; consequently, the gold will not peel, fade, or discolor.
We would like you to appreciate the deep luster of the under-glaze decoration and the intricate gold patterns of the *Kinrande* style; however, because the line work is exceptionally fine and delicate—with meticulous painting applied throughout—certain details may not be fully visible in the images due to light reflection. Please also note that the actual colors may appear slightly different depending on your computer's display settings.
