*Somenishiki* (literally "dyed and brocaded") is a traditional Arita ware style characterized by the incorporation of colors such as red, green, blue, and yellow. The process begins with underglaze blue painting followed by glazing and firing at 1,300°C; subsequently, traditional Arita overglaze enamels are applied, and the piece is fired again at 800°C. Because the piece is fired after the application of each color, the creation of a single work involves between four and ten separate firings. *Somenishiki*—specifically the *Iro-Nabeshima* (colored Nabeshima) style—originated around 1675, initially produced for castle furnishings and as presentation gifts for the Shogunate, feudal lords, and the Imperial Court. These techniques and traditions continue to be passed down to the present day.
**Peony (*Botan*)**
With its magnificent, large blossoms and noble bearing, the peony has long been known in China as the "King of Flowers" and a symbol of wealth and honor. In Japan, too, the peony's spectacular beauty has inspired its use in a wide variety of designs, from paintings to handicrafts. It is considered an auspicious motif that conveys a sense of elegant gentleness amidst its splendor.
**Iris (*Shobu* / *Ayame*)**
The iris is considered an auspicious plant; its flat, sword-like leaves evoke the image of a blade, and its remarkably refreshing fragrance is said to ward off evil spirits. Furthermore, the Japanese pronunciation of the plant's name, *shobu*, is a homophone for words signifying competitive strength and the martial spirit (*shobu*—valuing the martial arts and courtesy). Prized since ancient times for its graceful appearance, the iris has frequently been depicted in *Iro-Nabeshima* and *Ko-Imari* (Old Imari) wares. Its graceful, refined aesthetic makes it a highly popular motif even today.
**Wisteria (*Fuji*)**
Wisteria is a tree that grows wild in the mountains and fields, producing beautiful blossoms. It is a plant that has influenced Japanese culture, appearing frequently in classical literature and serving as the basis for the surname and family crest of the Fujiwara clan during the Heian period. Wisteria has long been admired for its graceful appearance and frequently depicted on Arita and Imari ware. With its elegance and refinement, the wisteria motif remains highly popular today.
**Folding Fan (*Sensu*)**
Folding fans are considered auspicious because they spread out into a fan shape, symbolizing ever-expanding prosperity (*suehirogari*). In Arita and Imari ware, they often appear as fan-shaped panels containing painted flowers or birds. This elegant design is a traditional auspicious motif that embodies the wish for enduring happiness.
**Arabesque (*Karakusa*)**
The arabesque pattern depicts intertwined plant vines. Arita ware features a wide variety of these designs, such as *Kiku-karakusa* (chrysanthemum arabesque), *Botan-karakusa* (peony arabesque), and *Kiri-karakusa* (paulownia arabesque)—which combine vines with flowers, leaves, or fruit—as well as the *Tako-karakusa* (octopus arabesque) pattern, named for its resemblance to the suction cups on an octopus's tentacles. Its perfected, traditional beauty appeals to everyone, making it a frequent choice for Arita and Imari ware. Because the vines extend endlessly in all directions, the arabesque is a traditional auspicious motif symbolizing longevity and prosperity.
