All of our products are all handmade and hand painted by Master Fujii Kinsai,
therefore each individual item are slightly different each other.
*Somenishiki* is a traditional Arita ware style characterized by the use of colors such as red, green, blue, and yellow. The process begins with underglaze blue painting followed by glazing and firing at 1,300°C; subsequently, traditional Arita overglaze enamels are applied, and the piece is fired again at 800°C. Because a separate firing is required for each color applied, the creation of a single piece involves anywhere from four to ten firing cycles. Originating around 1675, *Somenishiki* (specifically the *Iro-Nabeshima* style) was initially produced for castle furnishings and as presentation gifts for the Shogunate, feudal lords, and the Imperial Court. These techniques and traditions continue to be preserved to this day.
*Karakusa* (Arabesque)
The *karakusa* pattern depicts the intertwining vines of a plant. Arita ware features a wide variety of these arabesque designs, such as *kiku-karakusa* (chrysanthemum arabesque), *botan-karakusa* (peony arabesque), and *kiri-karakusa* (paulownia arabesque)—which incorporate flowers, leaves, and fruits—as well as the *tako-karakusa* (octopus arabesque) pattern, named for its resemblance to the suction cups on an octopus's tentacles. Admired by all for its perfected beauty as a traditional motif, this pattern appears frequently on Arita and Imari ware. Because the arabesque vines extend endlessly in all directions, the design is considered a traditional auspicious symbol representing longevity and prosperity.
