*Kinsai* (gold decoration) is a traditional Arita ware style characterized by a multi-stage creation process. It begins with underglaze painting followed by glazing and firing at 1,300°C. Next, traditional Arita overglaze enamels (in colors such as red, green, blue, and yellow) are applied and fired at 800°C. Finally, gold is used to add decorative patterns. Because the piece is fired after the application of each color, a single work may undergo five to ten separate firings before completion. The result is a magnificent, dignified style that combines brilliant gold accents with inventive color schemes and layouts.
**Pine, Bamboo, and Plum (*Sho-chiku-bai*)**
The pine and bamboo—which retain their green foliage even amidst wind, snow, and bitter cold—and the plum—which blooms earlier than other plants—are revered as symbols of longevity, nobility, and purity. The pine represents steadfastness and enduring vitality; the bamboo signifies integrity and high moral character; and the plum is celebrated for its delicate fragrance and elegance. These motifs have long been used in a wide range of decorative arts and ceramics; as auspicious patterns symbolizing good fortune, they are considered perfect for celebratory occasions.
**Cherry Blossoms (*Sakura*)**
Cherry blossoms are so beloved that they are synonymous with Japanese flowers and serve as the national flower of Japan. Their magnificent appearance has made them a popular motif in paintings and crafts since ancient times. Whether in full, glorious bloom or scattering their petals gently in the breeze, they create a festive atmosphere and remain a highly popular design.
**Peony (*Botan*)**
With its large, magnificent blossoms, the peony is a flower of splendor and luxury. Due to its noble bearing, it has long been known in China as the "King of Flowers" and a symbol of wealth and honor. In Japan, too, the peony is cherished for its breathtaking beauty and frequently appears in paintings and crafts. It is an auspicious motif that conveys a sense of elegant gentleness amidst its opulence. Peacock (*Kujaku*)
Peacock feathers are exceptionally beautiful, and the bird has long been cherished as a symbol of Paradise. Although not native to Japan, the peacock became widely known through artistic motifs from China and elsewhere; its elegant bearing inspired designs in countless paintings and craftworks, including treasures housed in the Shosoin Repository. The peacock exudes a magnificent, dazzling radiance that captivates all who behold it.
Tortoise-shell Pattern (*Kikkō-mon*)
This is a geometric pattern of regular hexagons, named for its resemblance to the pattern on a tortoise's shell. It has a long history and appears among the treasures of the Shosoin Repository. Its perfected beauty as a traditional pattern appeals to everyone, and it frequently adorns Arita and Imari ware. The tortoise symbolizes longevity, while the hexagonal shape—known for the incredible structural integrity of the honeycomb—is believed to be unbreakable, making this an auspicious pattern that embodies wishes for eternal prosperity.
Folding Fan (*Ōgi* or *Sensu*)
The folding fan is considered auspicious because it spreads out into a fan shape, symbolizing "widening prosperity" (*suehirogari*)—a future that expands and flourishes. In Arita and Imari ware, fan-shaped panels (*madoe*) are often used to frame depictions of flowers, birds, and other motifs. It is an elegant, traditional, and auspicious design that conveys a wish for enduring happiness.
Blue Ocean Waves (*Seigaiha*)
This geometric pattern consists of wave shapes arranged in a fan-like form and layered in an alternating, overlapping sequence. Its perfected beauty as a traditional pattern is widely admired, and it frequently appears on Color Nabeshima and Old Imari wares. It is an auspicious pattern that embodies a wish for a peaceful life to continue forever, much like the ceaseless, repeating waves of the vast, boundless ocean.
