*Kinsai* (gold decoration) is a traditional Arita-yaki style characterized by a multi-stage firing process. First, the piece is glazed and fired at 1,300°C; next, it is painted with traditional Arita-yaki colored enamels and fired at 800°C; finally, gold accents are applied to create patterns and decorative details. Because the piece is fired after the application of each color, the creation of a single work involves five to ten separate firings. The result is a magnificent, dignified style that combines brilliant gold decoration with inventive color schemes and layouts.
*Karakusa* (Arabesque)
The *karakusa* pattern depicts the intertwining vines of a plant. Arita-yaki features a wide variety of these patterns, ranging from designs that combine vines with flowers, leaves, or fruit—such as chrysanthemum, peony, or paulownia arabesques—to the "octopus arabesque" (*tako-karakusa*), named for its resemblance to the suction cups on an octopus tentacle. As a perfected traditional design, its beauty appeals to everyone, and it has frequently been used to decorate Arita-yaki and Imari-yaki wares. Because the arabesque pattern extends endlessly in all directions, it is considered an auspicious motif symbolizing longevity and prosperity.
