*Kinsai* (gold decoration) is a traditional Arita-yaki style characterized by a multi-stage firing process. It begins with underglaze painting followed by glazing and firing at 1,300°C; next, traditional Arita colored enamels are applied and fired at 800°C; finally, gold is used to add decorative patterns. Because the piece is fired after the application of each color, the creation of a single work involves five to ten separate firings. The result is a magnificent, dignified style that combines brilliant gold accents with inventive color schemes and layouts.

**Karakusa (Arabesque/Scrolling Vine)**
The *karakusa* pattern depicts the intertwining vines of a plant. Arita-yaki features a wide variety of these patterns, such as *kiku-karakusa* (chrysanthemum vines), *botan-karakusa* (peony vines), and *kiri-karakusa* (paulownia vines)—which combine vines with flowers, leaves, or fruit—as well as the *tako-karakusa* (octopus-vine) pattern, named for its resemblance to the suction cups on an octopus tentacle. Admired by all for its perfected beauty as a traditional motif, it appears frequently on Arita-yaki and Imari-yaki wares. Because the vines extend endlessly in all directions, the pattern is considered an auspicious symbol representing longevity and prosperity.

**Ume (Plum Blossom)**
Able to withstand the harsh winter and bloom before other plants, the plum blossom is a symbol of vitality. It is revered as an auspicious flower that brings the blessings of prosperous descendants and a long, harmonious life, and is also said to attract good fortune in relationships. It is a classic, celebratory motif that invites good luck.

**Cho (Butterfly)**
The butterfly is associated with longevity because its Japanese name (*chō*) shares the same pronunciation as the word for "long" (*chō*). Celebrated for the beauty of its magnificent wing shapes and colors, as well as its graceful growth and fluttering flight, it is a symbol of beauty often depicted in paintings and crafts. In Arita-yaki designs, butterflies are frequently paired with flowers to create gorgeous, vibrant compositions. Deer
Deer are familiar animals that frequently appear in ancient poetry, such as the *Man'yoshu*. In China, the character for "deer" is pronounced *roku*; because this pronunciation is similar to that of the character for "prosperity" or "official salary" (*roku*), the deer has come to be associated with *fukuroku* (good fortune and prosperity) and is said to bring these blessings. Influenced by this tradition, Japan has long cherished the deer as a symbol of longevity and prosperity, incorporating its image into a wide variety of items, including decorative objects and ceramics. Its combination of cuteness and modern aesthetic appeal makes it a highly popular auspicious motif.

A lion adorns the lid.
The lion has long reigned as the "king of beasts," serving as a symbol of bravery, grandeur, and power. In Japan, the lion became a favored motif among the warrior class starting around the Muromachi period and has since been depicted in a wide range of media, including ceramics and paintings. It is also believed that having a lion "bite" one's head brings good health and wards off illness—a custom reflected in the traditional lion dances performed during the New Year and other festive occasions. Revered since ancient times as a harbinger of good fortune and happiness, as well as a force that drives away pestilence, the lion is considered an exceptionally auspicious symbol.
