*Kinsai* (gold decoration) is a traditional Arita ware style characterized by a multi-stage process: underglaze painting followed by glazing and firing at 1,300°C; overglaze painting using traditional Arita pigments (incorporating colors such as red, green, blue, and yellow) followed by firing at 800°C; and finally, the application of gold patterns for decoration. Because the piece is fired after the application of each color, the creation of a single work involves five to ten separate firings. It is a magnificent and dignified style that combines brilliant gold decoration with inventive color schemes and layouts.
**Egret (*Sagi*)**
Because egrets fly to watersides near human settlements more frequently than cranes do, they have long been familiar to people and revered as sacred birds. In China, the word for egret (*lu*) is a homophone for the word for "path" or "journey" (*lu*), associating the bird with the auspicious concept of "uninterrupted prosperity along one's path." Influenced by this, the motif is widely used in Japanese arts, including *makie* lacquerware and ceramics. The image of a quietly standing egret—exuding an air of elegance and purity—is a popular auspicious motif.
**Plum Blossom (*Ume*)**
Plum blossoms, which endure the harsh winter and bloom before other plants, are considered symbols of vitality. They are also revered as auspicious flowers that bestow the blessings of prosperous descendants and a long, harmonious life, and are said to bring good fortune in relationships. It is a classic, celebratory motif that invites good luck.
**Tortoise-shell Pattern (*Kikkō-mon*)**
This is a geometric pattern of regular hexagons, named for its resemblance to the pattern on a tortoise's shell. The tortoise-shell pattern has a long history, appearing even among the treasures of the Shōsō-in repository. Its perfected beauty as a traditional design appeals to everyone, and it is frequently depicted on Arita and Imari ware. The tortoise symbolizes longevity, while the hexagonal shape—known as a honeycomb structure—is prized for its incredible strength and stability; thus, the pattern embodies wishes for eternal prosperity.
