*Kinsai* (gold decoration) is a traditional Arita-yaki style characterized by a multi-stage creation process. It begins with underglaze painting followed by glazing and firing at 1,300°C; next, traditional Arita colored enamels are applied and fired at 800°C; finally, gold accents are added to create intricate patterns. Because the piece is fired after the application of each color, a single finished work may undergo five to ten separate firings. The result is a magnificent, dignified style that combines brilliant gold decoration with inventive color schemes and layouts.
**Pine, Bamboo, and Plum (*Sho-chiku-bai*)**
The pine and bamboo—which retain their green foliage even amidst wind, snow, and bitter cold—and the plum—which blooms earlier than other plants—are revered as symbols of longevity, nobility, and purity. The pine represents enduring vitality; the bamboo signifies steadfast integrity and nobility; and the plum is celebrated for its delicate fragrance and elegance. These motifs have long adorned a wide variety of objects, including ceramics; as auspicious patterns symbolizing good fortune, they are considered perfect for celebratory occasions.
**Folding Fan (*Sensu*)**
The folding fan is considered a lucky charm because it spreads out into a fan shape, widening toward the edge—a form associated with ever-expanding prosperity (*suehirogari*). In Arita-yaki designs, these fans often serve as "window" frames (*madoe*) containing painted images of flowers, birds, and other subjects. It is an elegant, traditional auspicious pattern that embodies the wish for happiness to endure forever.
**Tortoiseshell Pattern (*Kikkō-mon*)**
This is a geometric pattern composed of regular hexagons, named for its resemblance to the pattern on a tortoise's shell. The tortoiseshell pattern has a long history, appearing even among the treasures of the Shosoin Repository. Its perfected beauty as a traditional design appeals to everyone, and it is frequently featured on Arita-yaki and Imari-yaki ceramics. The turtle is a symbol of longevity, and the hexagonal "tortoise-shell" pattern—resembling a honeycomb structure—is considered an auspicious design that embodies wishes for eternal prosperity, as the shape is said to possess incredible strength and structural integrity.
