*Kinsai* (gold decoration) is a traditional Arita ware style characterized by a multi-stage firing process. It begins with underglaze painting followed by glazing and firing at 1,300°C; next, traditional Arita overglaze enamels (red, green, blue, yellow, etc.) are applied and fired at 800°C; finally, gold is used to add decorative patterns. Because the piece is fired after the application of each color, the creation of a single work involves five to ten separate firings. The result is a magnificent, dignified style that combines brilliant gold accents with inventive color schemes and layouts.
**Mandarin Ducks (*Oshidori*)**
Male mandarin ducks are known for their striking, colorful appearance. As they are often seen moving in pairs, the term *oshidori fūfu* (mandarin duck couple) has become a common metaphor for a devoted, loving husband and wife. Their image has long been cherished in decorative patterns and can even be found among the treasures of the Shosoin Repository. It is an auspicious motif, beloved for symbolizing marital harmony and the blessing of a good marriage.
**Pine, Bamboo, and Plum (*Sho-chiku-bai*)**
The pine and bamboo—which retain their greenery even amidst wind, snow, and bitter cold—and the plum—which blooms earlier than other plants—are revered as symbols of longevity, nobility, and purity. The pine represents enduring vitality; the bamboo signifies steadfast integrity and nobility; and the plum is praised for its delicate fragrance and refined elegance. These designs have long adorned a wide variety of objects, including ceramics; they form a gorgeous, celebratory motif regarded as a symbol of good fortune.
**Blue Ocean Waves (*Seigaiha*)**
This is a geometric pattern featuring fan-shaped waves layered in an alternating arrangement. Its perfected beauty as a traditional pattern appeals to everyone, and it has frequently appeared on works of *Iro-Nabeshima* and *Ko-Imari* (Old Imari) ware. It is an auspicious motif that embodies the wish for a peaceful life to continue forever, much like the ceaseless, repeating waves of the vast, boundless ocean.
