*Kinsai* (gold decoration) is a traditional Arita ware style characterized by a multi-stage firing process. It begins with underglaze painting followed by glazing and firing at 1,300°C; next, traditional Arita overglaze enamels (in colors such as red, green, blue, and yellow) are applied and fired at 800°C; finally, gold accents are added to create intricate patterns. Because the piece is fired after the application of each color, the creation of a single work involves five to ten separate firings. The result is a magnificent, dignified style that combines brilliant gold decoration with inventive color schemes and layouts.
**Phoenix (*Hō-ō*)**
Originating in ancient China, the phoenix is a legendary, auspicious bird—known as the "King of Birds"—and is counted among the "Four Auspicious Creatures" alongside the tortoise, *qilin*, and dragon. The legend of the phoenix was introduced to Japan during the Asuka period; its motif has since been used on a wide variety of decorative objects and furnishings and remains beloved today as a symbol of good fortune.
**Paulownia (*Kiri*)**
Since ancient times, the paulownia tree has been considered auspicious. Regarded as a noble tree, it serves—alongside the chrysanthemum—as an emblem of the Japanese Imperial Family. In Arita and Imari ware, the paulownia is traditionally depicted as the tree upon which the phoenix perches; consequently, the two are frequently combined to create elegant and distinguished designs.
**Seigaiha (Blue Ocean Waves)**
This is a geometric pattern featuring wave motifs drawn in fan-like shapes and layered in an alternating arrangement. Its perfected beauty as a traditional pattern has made it a universal favorite, frequently appearing in *Iro-Nabeshima* and *Ko-Imari* (Old Imari) wares. It is an auspicious pattern embodying the wish for a peaceful life to continue forever, much like the ceaseless waves of the vast, unending ocean.
