This decorative plate is a work of fine art and craftsmanship, born from the sophisticated potter's wheel techniques underpinning the long history of Arita ware and executed with delicate brushwork. In particular, the masterful fusion of underglaze red (*yūrikō*) and gold accents creates a dignified beauty that captivates the viewer. Underglaze red is an exceptionally advanced and delicate technique in which a copper-based pigment is used for the underglaze design; oxidation and reduction processes during firing then bring out a deep red hue beneath the transparent glaze. Originating in China during the Yuan Dynasty, the technique appeared in Japan during the early Imari period but subsequently fell into decline due to the immense difficulty of the firing process. Because the final color is highly sensitive to even slight fluctuations in temperature or flame, achieving the finished piece requires consummate skill and years of experience—factors that further elevate its rarity and artistic value.
The design features a magnificent peacock and gracefully blooming peonies. Since ancient times, the peacock has been revered as an auspicious bird symbolizing the Pure Land, with its elegant form representing prosperity and happiness. Meanwhile, the peony—known as the "King of Flowers"—is a symbol of wealth and nobility, cherished widely as an auspicious motif that embodies both opulence and grace. The harmony of these two motifs imbues the piece with auspicious meanings of prosperity, wealth, and happiness, allowing it to exude a dignified presence.
This masterpiece adds an air of elegant splendor to various settings—such as a *tokonoma* (alcove), entryway, reception room, or living area—while allowing one to truly appreciate the depth and beauty of traditional Japanese craftsmanship. Valued for both its artistry and auspicious symbolism, it makes a delightful gift for recipients both in Japan and abroad, serving as a fine example of Japanese cultural appeal. It is truly a gem of a piece, breathing with the artisan's passion and techniques honed over a long history.
