*Yūri-kō* (underglaze red) is a technique in which a copper-based pigment is applied as an underglaze design; during firing, oxidation-reduction reactions are utilized to produce a red color beneath a transparent glaze. While the origins of *yūri-kō* date back to the late Yuan Dynasty in China (14th century), in the realm of Hizen porcelain, it was produced during the Early Imari period (1610–1650). However, the technique subsequently fell into decline because the firing process was difficult and the resulting color was unstable. If the firing temperature rose too high, the piece would turn stark white instead of red; firing in an oxidizing atmosphere would result in green. The outcome depended heavily on the nature of the flames, and even slight temperature variations could produce completely different colors. Achieving consistent results was extremely difficult—a challenge so great that, upon opening the kiln, potters often found more than two-thirds of the pieces to be failures.

*Kinsai* (gold decoration) is a traditional Arita ware style characterized by a multi-stage process: first, underglaze blue patterns are applied and fired at 1,300°C; next, traditional Arita overglaze enamels (red, green, blue, yellow, etc.) are applied and fired at 800°C; finally, gold is used to add decorative patterns. Because the piece is fired once for each color applied, a single finished work may undergo five to ten separate firings. The result is a magnificent, dignified style that combines brilliant gold decoration with inventive color schemes and layouts.

Cherry Blossoms (*Sakura*)
Cherry blossoms are so beloved that they are synonymous with Japanese flowers and serve as the national flower of Japan. Their splendid appearance has made them a popular motif in a wide range of art and crafts since ancient times. Whether in full, glorious bloom or with petals fluttering gently to the ground, the cherry blossom is a highly popular pattern that evokes a festive and elegant atmosphere.
