*Kinsai* (gold decoration) is a traditional Arita ware style characterized by a multi-stage process: underglaze painting followed by glazing and firing at 1,300°C; overglaze painting using traditional Arita colors followed by firing at 800°C; and finally, the application of gold patterns for decoration. Because the piece is fired once for each color applied, a single work may undergo five to ten firings before completion. It is a magnificent and dignified style that incorporates brilliant gold accents alongside inventive color schemes and layouts.
*Yūrikō* (underglaze red) is a technique that uses copper-based pigments for underglaze painting; by utilizing oxidation-reduction reactions during firing, a crimson color is produced beneath a transparent glaze. While the origins of *yūrikō* date back to the late Yuan Dynasty in China (14th century), in the context of Hizen porcelain, it was produced during the Early Imari period (1610–1650). However, the technique subsequently declined due to the difficulty of the firing process and the instability of the resulting colors. If the firing temperature rises too high, the color fails to develop, leaving the piece stark white; conversely, firing in an oxidizing atmosphere results in a green hue. The outcome is highly sensitive to the nature of the flames, and even slight temperature variations can produce completely different colors. Achieving consistent results is notoriously difficult—a complex technique where, in countless instances, more than two-thirds of the pieces had to be discarded upon removal from the kiln.
Swallow (*Tsubame*)
The swallow is a bird familiar to many, often building its nests under the eaves of houses. It is said that a swallow nesting under one's eaves brings good fortune and family prosperity; consequently, swallow motifs have long been cherished and used across a wide range of arts, including *makie* lacquerware and ceramics. It is a highly popular auspicious motif, valued for the bird's charming appearance and the modern appeal of the design.
Wisteria (*Fuji*)
Wisteria is a tree that grows wild in mountains and fields, producing beautiful blossoms. This tree frequently appears in classical literature and influenced Japanese culture; notably, the Fujiwara clan adopted its name and family crest from it during the Heian period. Its elegant blossoms have long been admired and widely depicted on ceramics, *maki-e* (gold-sprinkled lacquerware), and other lacquerware. With its grace and refinement, the wisteria remains a highly popular motif to this day.
