*Yūrikō* (underglaze red) is a technique in which a copper-based pigment is used for underglaze painting; by utilizing oxidation-reduction reactions during firing, a red color is produced beneath a transparent glaze. While the origins of *yūrikō* date back to the late Yuan Dynasty in China (14th century), in the realm of Hizen porcelain, it was produced during the Early Imari period (1610–1650). However, because the firing process is difficult and the resulting color unstable, the technique subsequently fell into decline. If the firing temperature rises too high, the piece turns stark white without developing the red color; if fired in an oxidizing atmosphere, it turns green. The outcome depends heavily on the nature of the flames, and even slight temperature variations can result in completely different colors. Achieving consistent results is difficult, and it is a notoriously challenging technique where, on countless occasions, more than two-thirds of the pieces had to be discarded upon removal from the kiln.

*Kinsai* (gold decoration) is a traditional Arita ware style characterized by a multi-stage process: first, underglaze blue painting is applied, glazed, and fired at 1,300°C; next, traditional Arita overglaze enamels (red, green, blue, yellow, etc.) are applied and fired at 800°C; finally, gold is used to add decorative patterns. Since the piece is fired once for each color applied, the creation of a single work involves five to ten separate firings. It is a magnificent and dignified style that incorporates brilliant gold decoration alongside inventive color schemes and layouts.

Wisteria (*Fuji*)
Wisteria is a tree that grows wild in the mountains and fields, producing beautiful blossoms. It frequently appears in classical literature and influenced Japanese culture, having been adopted for the surname and family crest of the Fujiwara clan during the Heian period. Its graceful floral appearance has long been admired and frequently depicted on ceramics, *maki-e* (sprinkled gold lacquerware), and other lacquerware. With its elegance and refinement, the wisteria motif remains highly popular today.
