*Somenishiki* is a traditional Arita ware style characterized by the incorporation of colors such as red, green, blue, and yellow. The process begins with underglaze blue painting followed by glazing and firing at 1,300°C; subsequently, traditional Arita overglaze enamels are applied, and the piece is fired again at 800°C. Because the piece is fired after the application of each color, the creation of a single work involves between four and ten separate firings. *Somenishiki* (specifically the *Iro-Nabeshima* style) originated around 1675, initially produced for castle furnishings and as presentation gifts for the Shogunate, feudal lords, and the Imperial Court. These techniques and traditions continue to be preserved to this day.
Peony (*Botan*)
With its magnificent, large blossoms and noble bearing, the peony has long been known in China as the "King of Flowers" and revered as a symbol of wealth and honor. In Japan, too, the peony's spectacular beauty has inspired its use as a motif across a wide range of art forms, including paintings and handicrafts. It is considered an auspicious pattern that conveys a sense of elegant grace amidst its splendor.
