*Somenishiki* is a traditional Arita ware style characterized by the incorporation of colors such as red, green, blue, and yellow. The process begins with underglaze blue painting followed by glazing and firing at 1,300°C; subsequently, traditional Arita overglaze enamels are applied, and the piece is fired again at 800°C. Because each color requires a separate firing, a single piece may undergo between four and ten firings before completion. Originating around 1675, *Somenishiki* (specifically the *Iro-Nabeshima* style) was initially created for castle furnishings and as presentation gifts for the Shogunate, feudal lords, and the Imperial Court. These techniques and traditions continue to be passed down to the present day.

**Paulownia (*Kiri*)**
Since ancient times, the paulownia tree has been considered auspicious. Regarded as a noble tree, it serves—alongside the chrysanthemum—as an emblem of the Imperial Family. In Arita and Imari ware designs, the paulownia is frequently paired with the phoenix (*hō-ō*), as legend holds that the phoenix perches upon it; this combination creates a highly dignified and elegant motif.

**Phoenix (*Hō-ō*)**
The phoenix is a mythical, auspicious bird—known as the "King of Birds"—that originated in ancient China and is counted among the "Four Auspicious Creatures" alongside the tortoise, *qilin*, and dragon. Legends of the phoenix were introduced to Japan during the Asuka period, and its image has since been used in a wide variety of decorative arts and furnishings; today, it remains a beloved motif symbolizing good fortune.

**Arabesque (*Karakusa*)**
The arabesque pattern depicts the intertwining vines of a plant. Arita ware features a diverse range of arabesque styles, including patterns that combine vines with flowers, leaves, or fruit—such as chrysanthemum, peony, and paulownia arabesques—as well as the "octopus arabesque" (*tako-karakusa*), named for its resemblance to the suction cups on an octopus's tentacles. Admired by all for its perfected beauty as a traditional motif, the arabesque pattern appears frequently on Arita and Imari ware. The *karakusa* (arabesque) pattern is a traditional auspicious design; because the vines extend endlessly in all directions, it is said to symbolize longevity and prosperity.
