Somenishiki is a traditional Arita ware style in which glaze is applied over the dyeing and fired at 1300 degrees, then painted with traditional Arita ware color paints and fired at 800 degrees, incorporating colors such as red, green, blue, and yellow. Since each color is fired once, each piece is fired 4 to 10 times before it is completed. Somenishiki (Colored Nabeshima) began around 1675 and was first made as castle furniture and gifts for the shogun's family, various feudal lords, and the imperial court. Even today, the techniques and traditions have been passed down.
Colored Nabeshima style
Products made by the Saga Nabeshima family as gifts or for personal use were made in the domain's official kiln. The works produced in this official kiln are called "Nabeshima" and are highly acclaimed around the world. Since it was requested as a gift, a highly finished and dignified product was produced. It is believed that the official kiln was established in Iwatayasendai (Arita) during the Kanei era (1624-1644), moved to Minamikawara (Arita) during the Kanbun era (1661-1673), and moved to Okawachi (Imari City) during the Enpo era (1673-1680). "Nabeshima" also had celadon and dyed porcelain, but among them, the work that was used as the color for the overglaze is called "colored Nabeshima." The decoration of Ironabeshima is based on the four colors of blue for dyeing and red, green, and yellow for overlay. The Nabeshima style has been inherited as a decorative technique in modern Arita ware.
