*Sometsuke* refers to ware decorated with patterns in a single shade of blue. This style originated in Arita ware 400 years ago. A design is painted onto the unglazed porcelain body using a pigment known as *gosu*—composed of materials such as cobalt oxide, manganese, iron, and kaolin—and then covered with a transparent glaze before firing, which causes the design to emerge in a blue hue. The shade of blue varies depending on the amount of cobalt oxide used, the glaze, the porcelain clay, and the firing method; the resulting colors range from vivid indigo to pale tones or deep, dark-tinged hues. Appreciating these subtle variations and the unique character of the color is one of the true pleasures of *sometsuke*. Introduced to Arita via China and Korea, the style is characterized by an elegant beauty, combining the warmth of white porcelain with the simplicity of blue-only decoration.

**Carp**
In China, there is a legend that a carp that swims up the Dragon Gate waterfall in the turbulent Yellow River transforms into a dragon; consequently, the carp is revered as a symbol of great leaps forward and career success. This concept spread to Japan, and from the late Edo period onward, *koinobori* (carp streamers) came to be flown during the Tango no Sekku festival to pray for children's healthy growth and future success. Carp motifs have long been cherished and used in a wide variety of art forms, including *makie* (gold lacquerware) and ceramics. With its noble beauty, the carp is a highly auspicious and popular motif.

**Monkey**
In China, monkeys are regarded as mysterious beings. Because their movements and appearance resemble those of humans, they have appeared as protagonists in legends and folktales, such as *Journey to the West*. In Japan, too, monkeys have long been believed to be messengers of the gods. Due to the pun between the word for monkey (*saru*) and the verb meaning "to leave" or "to drive away" (*saru*), it serves as an auspicious motif symbolizing the driving away of misfortune and the achievement of promotion or success.

**Deer**
Deer are familiar animals in Japan, frequently appearing in ancient poetry such as the *Man'yoshu*. In China, the word for deer is pronounced *roku*; because this pronunciation is identical to that of the word for "official salary" or "prosperity" (*roku*), the deer is associated with *fukuroku* (good fortune and prosperity) and is said to bring these blessings. Influenced by these origins, this design has long been cherished in Japan as an auspicious pattern symbolizing longevity and prosperity, appearing on a wide variety of items ranging from decorative objects to furnishings.

Karakusa (Arabesque)
The *karakusa* pattern depicts the intertwining vines of a plant. In Arita ware, this motif takes many forms: variations combining vines with flowers, leaves, or fruit—such as chrysanthemum, peony, or paulownia arabesques—and the "octopus arabesque" (*tako-karakusa*), named for its resemblance to the suction cups on an octopus's tentacles. Its perfected beauty as a traditional pattern appeals to people of all tastes, making it a frequent choice for Arita and Imari ware. Because the arabesque vine extends endlessly in all directions, it is regarded as a traditional auspicious symbol representing longevity and prosperity.
