*Sometsuke* (Blue-and-White Ware)
*Sometsuke* refers to ceramics decorated with patterns in a single blue color; this style originated in Arita 400 years ago. The process involves applying an underglaze—made from pigments such as cobalt oxide, manganese, iron, and kaolin—onto the raw porcelain body, then coating it with a transparent glaze and firing it, which causes the design to turn blue. The shade of blue varies depending on the amount of cobalt oxide used, the glaze, the porcelain clay, and the firing method; the resulting colors range from vivid indigo to pale hues or deep, dark tones. Appreciating these subtle variations and the unique character of the color is one of the true pleasures of *sometsuke*. Introduced to Arita via China and Korea, this style is characterized by its elegance and beauty, combining the warmth of white porcelain with simple, blue-only painted designs.

*Sansui-ga* (Landscape Painting)
*Sansui-ga* is a style of landscape painting that depicts nature with rich shading, created solely through the varying tones of *gosu*—the traditional pigment used in Arita ware. Originally introduced to Japan from China, this painting style resonated deeply with the Japanese people and became an integral part of Japanese culture, appearing on everything from fine art to everyday crafts and giving rise to a wide array of uniquely Japanese works. These landscapes—featuring elements like deep mountains and flowing rivers—evoke a serene, profound, and mysterious world, far removed from the worldly cares of everyday life.

*Karakusa* (Arabesque/Scrolling Vine Pattern)
The *karakusa* pattern depicts the intertwining vines of a plant. Arita ware features a wide variety of these scrolling vine designs, including patterns that combine vines with flowers, leaves, or fruit—such as chrysanthemum, peony, or paulownia arabesques—as well as the "octopus arabesque" (*tako-karakusa*), named for the resemblance of its swirling motifs to the suckers on an octopus's tentacles. Admired by all for its perfected, classic beauty, this pattern has frequently adorned Arita and Imari ware. Because the vines extend endlessly in all directions without interruption, the *karakusa* is considered an auspicious traditional pattern symbolizing longevity and prosperity. Shippō Pattern
This pattern is created by interlocking circles of uniform size, each overlapping by one-quarter. Its perfected beauty as a traditional design appeals to people of all tastes, and it has frequently been used to decorate Arita and Imari ware. The circular shapes in the Shippō pattern symbolize harmony and completeness. Furthermore, because the circles link together endlessly, the pattern serves as a traditional auspicious design embodying wishes for everlasting peace and the prosperity of one's descendants.
