*Sometsuke* refers to ware decorated with patterns in a single shade of blue. This style originated in Arita ware 400 years ago. The process involves applying an underglaze design—using pigments (*gosu*) composed of materials such as cobalt oxide, manganese, iron, and kaolin—onto the raw porcelain body; a transparent glaze is then applied over the design before firing, causing the pigment to develop a blue color. The specific shade of blue varies depending on factors such as the amount of cobalt oxide used, the glaze composition, the type of porcelain clay, and the firing method—resulting in hues ranging from vivid indigo to pale tones or deep, dark blues. Appreciating these subtle variations and the unique character of the color is one of the true pleasures of *sometsuke*. Introduced to Arita via China and Korea, the style is characterized by its elegance and beauty, combining the warmth of white porcelain with single-color blue decoration.
Elephant
The elephant is the largest land animal and is considered a sacred creature; according to legend, eight elephants were born from an egg during the creation of the universe by the deity Brahma, becoming the guardians that support the heavens from the cardinal directions. The motif was introduced to Japan and used in designs as early as the Nara period. Revered as a symbol of happiness, the elephant is regarded as an auspicious motif representing an animal that brings joy to people's hearts.
