*Sometsuke* (blue-and-white ware) refers to ceramics decorated with patterns in a single blue color. This style originated in Arita ware 400 years ago. The process involves applying an underglaze design—using pigments known as *gosu* (derived from materials such as cobalt oxide, manganese, iron, and kaolin)—onto the raw porcelain body, then coating it with a transparent glaze and firing it; this causes the design to emerge in a distinctive blue hue. The shade of blue varies depending on factors such as the amount of cobalt oxide used, the glaze, the porcelain clay, and the firing method—ranging from vivid indigo to pale tones or deep, dark-tinged hues. Appreciating these subtle nuances and the unique character of the color is one of the true pleasures of *sometsuke*. Introduced to Arita via China and the Korean Peninsula, the style is characterized by an elegant beauty, combining the warmth of white porcelain with the simplicity of blue-only decoration.
**Carp**
In China, there is a legend that a carp ascending the "Dragon Gate" waterfall in the turbulent Yellow River transforms into a dragon; consequently, the carp is revered as a symbol of great strides and success in life. This concept spread to Japan, and from the late Edo period onward, *koinobori* (carp streamers) came to be flown during the Tango no Sekku festival to pray for children's healthy growth and future success. Carp motifs have long been cherished and utilized in a wide variety of art forms, including *makie* (gold lacquerware) and ceramics. With their noble beauty, carp are considered highly auspicious and remain a popular decorative motif.
**Cherry Blossoms**
Cherry blossoms are so beloved that they are synonymous with Japanese flowers and serve as the national flower of Japan. Their magnificent appearance has made them a popular motif in a wide range of artistic fields, from paintings to traditional crafts, for centuries. Whether in full, glorious bloom or scattering their petals gently in the breeze, cherry blossoms create a festive, vibrant atmosphere and remain an immensely popular design.
