*Sometsuke* refers to ware decorated with patterns in a single shade of blue. This style originated in Arita-yaki (Arita ware) 400 years ago. The process involves applying an underglaze—using pigments known as *gosu* (composed of materials such as cobalt oxide, manganese, iron, and kaolin)—onto the raw porcelain body; a transparent glaze is then applied over the design before firing, causing the pigment to develop a distinctive blue color. The resulting blue hue varies depending on factors such as the amount of cobalt oxide used, the glaze composition, the type of porcelain clay, and the firing method. These variations—ranging from vivid indigo to pale shades or deep, dark-tinged blues—offer a rich array of expressions, and appreciating these subtle nuances is one of the true delights of *sometsuke*. Introduced to Arita via China and Korea, the style is characterized by an elegant beauty, combining the warmth of white porcelain with the simplicity of monochrome blue decoration.
*Sansui-ga* (Landscape Painting)
*Sansui-ga* is a style of landscape painting that depicts the natural world with rich shading and depth, utilizing only the varying tones of *gosu*—the traditional pigment of Arita ware. Originally introduced to Japan from China, this style resonated deeply with the Japanese people and became an integral part of Japanese culture; it was applied to fine art and crafts, giving rise to a wide variety of uniquely Japanese works. These landscapes—featuring elements such as deep mountains and flowing rivers—evoke a serene, profound, and mysterious world, far removed from the worldly cares of everyday life.
