The treasure of the highest quality

This piece represents the culmination of the artist's technical expertise, featuring the "Kinrande-style underglaze-color" (*yūrisai*) technique—a method perfected through countless trials to achieve intricate designs with a distinctive luster. Its greatest appeal lies in the original technique developed by Kinsai Fujii. While conventional overglaze porcelain painting involves firing pigments onto a previously glazed and fired surface, this work employs a unique underglaze-color method that allows vibrant hues to emerge from beneath a transparent glaze, resulting in a flawless, radiant porcelain surface. The artist masterfully employs subtle tonal shifts and a distinctive "soft-focus" (*bokashi*) technique; by eschewing hard outlines and instead using varying color densities to softly blur the subjects, he creates a sense of depth and shading. Furthermore, the piece is finished with intricate detailing using matte gold accents against the glossy porcelain surface—extending the decoration even to the base (foot) of the vase—a process demanding immense time, effort, and refined skill. The contrast between the deep luster of the porcelain and the matte gold creates an indescribable elegance and commanding presence. It is a masterpiece highly prized as a gift for distinguished guests from around the world.

Gourd (*Hyōtan*)
The image of six gourds (*mu-byō*) is a homophone for "freedom from illness" (*mu-byō*), and the motif also evokes the proverb "a horse from a gourd" (*hyōtan kara koma*), signifying an unexpected realization of something once spoken in jest. Treasured for both its auspicious symbolism and its intriguing, distinctive shape—characterized by its constricted waist—the gourd has long been a favorite motif in Arita and Imari ware. It is a traditional, auspicious pattern symbolizing health, longevity, and family harmony.

Due to the immense time and effort required for their creation, only about ten pieces in this Kinrande-style underglaze-color technique are produced annually, making each one a rare, one-of-a-kind masterpiece of the highest quality. The gold decoration in the *Kinrande* style is applied using the *yūri-kinsai* (gold-under-glaze) technique; the gold is covered with a thin layer of transparent glaze and fired, ensuring it will not peel, fade, or discolor.

We would love for you to appreciate the deep luster of the under-glaze decoration and the intricate gold patterns of the *Kinrande* style; however, because the line work is exceptionally fine and delicate—with meticulous painting applied throughout—certain details may not be fully visible in the images due to light reflection. Please also note that the actual colors may appear slightly different depending on your computer's display settings.
