All of our products are all handmade and hand painted by Master Fujii Kinsai,
therefore each individual item are slightly different each other.
*Somenishiki* (literally "dyed and brocaded") is a traditional Arita ware style characterized by the incorporation of colors such as red, green, blue, and yellow. The process begins with underglaze blue painting followed by glazing and firing at 1,300°C; subsequently, traditional Arita overglaze enamels are applied, and the piece is fired again at 800°C. Because the piece is fired once for each color applied, the creation of a single work involves between four and ten separate firings. The *Somenishiki* (or *Iro-Nabeshima*) style originated around 1675, with pieces initially created as furnishings for the castle or as gifts for the Shogunate, feudal lords, and the Imperial Court. These techniques and traditions continue to be passed down to the present day.
**Iro-Nabeshima Style**
Wares intended for the Saga Nabeshima family—whether for personal use or as gifts—were produced in the domain's official kilns. Pieces created in these kilns are known simply as "Nabeshima" and are highly acclaimed worldwide. Because they were commissioned as gifts, the resulting products were of exceptional quality and elegance. It is believed that the official kiln was first established at Iwataya-gawachi (Arita) during the Kan'ei era (1624–1644), moved to Minami-gawachi (Arita) during the Kanbun era (1661–1673), and finally relocated to Okawachi (Imari City) during the Enpo era (1673–1680). While "Nabeshima" ware includes celadon and underglaze blue pieces, those featuring overglaze enamel colors are specifically known as "*Iro-Nabeshima*" (Colored Nabeshima). The decoration of *Iro-Nabeshima* is based on four colors: the blue of the underglaze and the red, green, and yellow of the overglaze enamels. The Nabeshima style lives on today as a decorative technique in modern Arita ware.
**Swallow (*Tsubame*)**
Swallows are birds that feel very familiar to people, as they often build their nests under the eaves of houses. Swallows building nests under the eaves of a house are said to bring prosperity and good fortune; consequently, swallow motifs have long been cherished and incorporated into a wide variety of arts, including *maki-e* lacquerware and ceramics. This auspicious pattern is highly popular thanks to the swallow's charming appearance and the motif's modern aesthetic.
Wisteria (*Fuji*)
Wisteria is a tree that grows wild in the mountains and fields, producing beautiful blossoms. It is a plant that has influenced Japanese culture, appearing frequently in classical literature and serving as the surname and family crest of the Fujiwara clan during the Heian period. Its graceful floral appearance has long been admired, leading to its frequent depiction on ceramics, *maki-e*, and other lacquerware. With its elegance and refinement, the wisteria remains a highly popular motif to this day.
