*Sometsuke* (blue-and-white ware) is a signature technique of Arita ware in which a design is painted onto the porcelain body using *gosu* (cobalt pigment) before a transparent glaze is applied and the piece is fired, resulting in a distinctive indigo hue. Variations in the cobalt concentration and subtle differences during firing create a rich array of expressions—ranging from deep blues to soft, bleeding washes—evoking a sense of quiet elegance and the aesthetic of *wabi* (subdued refinement). In this piece, the gentle gradations of indigo evoke the tranquility of the water's edge, resulting in a design that exudes a calm, serene atmosphere.

Goldfish originated from the scarlet crucian carp discovered in China and were introduced to Japan toward the end of the Muromachi period. Because the Japanese word for "fish" (*uo*) is a homophone for "abundance" (*yo*), the goldfish is considered an auspicious motif symbolizing wealth and prosperity, and it has long been a cherished subject in traditional crafts and painting. The image of two goldfish swimming close together signifies harmony, contentment, and prosperity; set against a composition that evokes a still water surface, the design captures a gentle sense of life and emotional resonance.

Harmonizing traditional Arita ware techniques with a modern sensibility, this piece is a work of art worthy of any collection. The auspicious goldfish motif and the beauty of the *sometsuke* style—quintessentially Japanese—are also highly appreciated internationally, making this an ideal gift for sharing the spirit of Japanese culture. With its dignified presence, this Arita ware decorative plate is a piece to be cherished for years to come.
