*Sometsuke* refers to ware decorated with patterns in a single shade of blue. This style originated in Arita 400 years ago. An underglaze design is painted onto the porcelain body using pigments (*gosu*) containing materials such as cobalt oxide, manganese, iron, and kaolin; a transparent glaze is then applied over the design before firing, causing the pattern to emerge in a beautiful blue hue. The shade of blue varies depending on the amount of cobalt oxide, the glaze, the clay, and the firing method—ranging from vivid indigo to pale tones or deep, dark-tinged blues—and savoring these subtle nuances and the unique character of the color is one of the true pleasures of *sometsuke*. Introduced to Arita via China and Korea, this style combines the warmth of white porcelain with single-color blue painting to create an elegant and beautiful aesthetic.
*Kinsai* (gold decoration) is a traditional Arita style characterized by intricate gold ornamentation. The process involves applying glaze over the underglaze painting and firing at 1,300°C, followed by painting with traditional Arita colored enamels and firing again at 800°C to incorporate colors such as red, green, blue, and yellow; finally, gold is applied to create decorative patterns. Because the piece is fired separately for each color applied, the creation process requires between five and ten firings to complete a single work. It is a magnificent and dignified style that combines dazzling gold decoration with inventive color schemes and layouts. Goldfish are said to have originated from a red mutation of the crucian carp discovered in China around the 4th century. They were introduced to Japan toward the end of the Muromachi period and have since been prized for their ornamental beauty. In Chinese, the word for "fish" shares the same pronunciation as the word for "abundance" or "surplus"; consequently, the goldfish is regarded as an auspicious symbol of prosperity and wealth. In Japan, they have been depicted in various forms, including haiku poetry, *kyoka* (humorous verse), and ceramics. With their charming appearance and evocative, modern aesthetic, they serve as a highly popular auspicious motif.
