This *yunomi* (tea cup) features a design of pine, bamboo, and plum—painted in the *sometsuke* (blue-and-white) style—over a glaze made from *isu* (Japanese winter hazel) ash, which evokes a refined, rustic charm. *Sometsuke* is a traditional Arita ware technique in which an underglaze design is painted onto the clay body using a pigment known as *gosu* (cobalt oxide); a transparent glaze is then applied before firing, resulting in a beautiful, vibrant indigo hue. Subtle variations in color—arising from the specific cobalt blend, the glaze, and the firing process—ensure that no two pieces are exactly alike, allowing the cup to develop a deeper character the more it is used.

The *isu* ash glaze is characterized by a slight flow during firing, causing the painted indigo lines to bleed softly into the surrounding area. This creates intentionally gentle outlines for the pine, bamboo, and plum motifs, lending the piece an air of quiet serenity and warmth. The combination of the white porcelain’s purity, the calm indigo tones, and the glaze’s natural variations creates a sophisticated, tranquil aesthetic.

The pine, bamboo, and plum motif has long been cherished as an auspicious design symbolizing longevity, nobility, and purity. The pine and bamboo retain their greenery even in the harshness of winter, while the plum is among the first to bloom amidst the cold; together, they embody the spirit of living beautifully while enduring hardship, making this design ideal for celebrations and gifts. As a motif that has been repeatedly employed throughout the history of Arita ware, it remains beloved across generations.

With its satisfying weight in the hand and a gentle feel against the lips, this cup brings a sense of calm to your daily tea ritual. Its timeless design and understated character make it a piece to be cherished for years, regardless of season or age—a cup that becomes an integral part of your life the more you use it. Harmonizing traditional craftsmanship with natural, organic beauty, this vessel is perfect for everyday use and makes a wonderful gift for someone special.
