*Kinsai* (gold decoration) is a traditional Arita ware style characterized by a multi-stage process: underglaze painting followed by glazing and firing at 1,300°C; painting with traditional Arita colored enamels (such as red, green, blue, and yellow) followed by firing at 800°C; and finally, adding decorative gold patterns. Because the piece is fired after the application of each color, the creation of a single work involves five to ten separate firings. The result is a magnificent, dignified style that combines brilliant gold decoration with inventive color schemes and layouts.

*Karakusa* (Arabesque/Scrolling Vine Pattern)
The *karakusa* pattern depicts the intertwining vines of a plant. Arita ware features a wide variety of these patterns, including designs that combine vines with flowers, leaves, or fruit—such as chrysanthemum, peony, and paulownia arabesques—as well as the "octopus arabesque" (*tako-karakusa*), named for its resemblance to the suction cups on an octopus tentacle. Admired by all for its perfected beauty as a traditional motif, it appears frequently on Arita and Imari ware. Because the vines extend endlessly in all directions, the pattern is considered an auspicious symbol representing longevity and prosperity.

*Botan* (Peony)
With its large, magnificent blossoms and noble bearing, the peony has long been known in China as the "King of Flowers" and a symbol of wealth and honor. In Japan, too, the peony's spectacular beauty has inspired its use in a wide range of designs, from paintings to handicrafts. It is an auspicious motif that conveys a sense of elegant gentleness amidst its splendor.

*Ko-Imari* (Old Imari) Style
Ceramics produced in the Hizen region (modern-day Saga and Nagasaki prefectures) from the late 17th to the late 18th century were exported to European nations via the port of Imari. Consequently, ceramics from the Hizen region came to be known both domestically and internationally as "Imari ware" (or "Old Imari"), named after the port from which they were shipped. Characterized by deep blue underglaze painting, lavish use of red and gold pigments, and intricate floral patterns covering the entire surface, this style is believed to reflect the prosperous spirit of the Genroku era. Hizen ceramics exported to Europe were highly prized, adorning the palaces of royalty and the mansions of the aristocracy. This elegant and magnificent style, which captivated 17th-century Europe, remains beloved today and endures as a signature style of Arita ware.
