Iro-Nabeshima (Colored Nabeshima) Style
Wares intended as gifts or for personal use by the Nabeshima family of Saga were produced in the domain's official kilns. Pieces created in these kilns are known as "Nabeshima ware" and are highly acclaimed worldwide. Because they were commissioned as gifts, the resulting products were of exceptional quality and possessed a refined elegance. It is believed that the official kiln was first established at Iwataya-gawachi (Arita) during the Kan'ei era (1624–1644), moved to Minami-gawara (Arita) during the Kanbun era (1661–1673), and finally relocated to Okawachi (Imari City) during the Enpō era (1673–1680). While "Nabeshima" ware includes celadon and blue-and-white pieces, those featuring overglaze enamel colors are specifically known as "Iro-Nabeshima" (Colored Nabeshima). The decoration of Iro-Nabeshima is based on a palette of four colors: the blue of underglaze cobalt and the red, green, and yellow of overglaze enamels. The Nabeshima style lives on today as a decorative technique in modern Arita ware.
Hydrangea (*Ajisai*)
The hydrangea is a flower native to Japan that grows in clusters from the base; its blossoms change color—ranging from purple and white to blue and pink—depending on soil conditions. Its radiant beauty has been celebrated in poetry since the *Man'yōshū* era, and the flower is frequently used as a motif in traditional crafts such as Old Imari ware and *maki-e* lacquerware. With its clusters of four-petaled blossoms, the hydrangea is a flower rich in atmosphere and remains a highly popular decorative motif.
*Somenishiki* (Underglaze Blue and Overglaze Enamel)
*Somenishiki* is a traditional Arita ware style that incorporates colors such as red, green, blue, and yellow. The process involves applying a glaze over the underglaze blue design and firing it at 1,300°C; subsequently, traditional Arita overglaze enamels are applied, followed by a second firing at 800°C. Because the piece is fired once for each color applied, the creation of a single finished work requires between four and ten separate firings. Some-nishiki (Iro-Nabeshima) ware originated around 1675, initially created for use as furnishings within the castle and as presentation pieces for the Shogunate, feudal lords, and the Imperial Court; these techniques and traditions have been passed down to the present day.
