All of our products are all handmade and hand painted by Master Fujii Kinsai,
therefore each individual item are slightly different each other.
*Somenishiki* (literally "dyed and brocaded") is a traditional Arita ware style characterized by the incorporation of colors such as red, green, blue, and yellow. The process begins with underglaze blue painting, followed by glazing and firing at 1,300°C; subsequently, traditional Arita overglaze enamels are applied, and the piece is fired again at 800°C. Because a separate firing is required for each color applied, the creation of a single piece involves between four and ten firing cycles. Originating around 1675, *Somenishiki* (specifically the *Iro-Nabeshima* or "Colored Nabeshima" style) was initially produced for castle furnishings and as presentation gifts for the Shogunate, feudal lords, and the Imperial Court. These techniques and traditions continue to be passed down to the present day.
**The *Iro-Nabeshima* Style**
Wares intended for gifts or personal use by the Nabeshima family of Saga were produced at the domain's official kiln. Pieces created at this kiln are known simply as "Nabeshima" and are highly acclaimed worldwide. As they were commissioned as gifts, the resulting products were distinguished by their exceptional quality and refined elegance. The official kiln is believed to have been established at Iwataya-gawachi (Arita) during the Kan'ei era (1624–1644), relocated to Minami-gawara (Arita) during the Kanbun era (1661–1673), and finally moved to Okawachi (Imari City) during the Enpō era (1673–1680). While "Nabeshima" ware includes celadon and underglaze blue pieces, those featuring overglaze enamel colors are specifically designated as "*Iro-Nabeshima*" (Colored Nabeshima). The decoration of *Iro-Nabeshima* is based on a palette of four colors: the blue of the underglaze and the red, green, and yellow of the overglaze enamels. The Nabeshima style lives on today as a decorative technique in modern Arita ware.
**Hydrangea (*Ajisai*)**
The hydrangea is a flower native to Japan that grows in clusters from the base; its blossoms shift in color—ranging from purple and white to blue and pink—depending on soil conditions. Its radiant beauty has been celebrated in poetry, such as in the *Man'yōshū* (Japan's oldest anthology of poetry), and the flower is frequently used as a decorative motif in traditional arts like Old Imari ware and *maki-e* lacquerware. Hydrangeas, with their clusters of four-petaled blossoms, are flowers rich in atmosphere, and the motif is highly popular.
