*Somenishiki* (literally "dyed and brocaded") is a traditional Arita ware style characterized by the incorporation of colors such as red, green, blue, and yellow. The process begins with underglaze blue painting followed by glazing and firing at 1,300°C; subsequently, traditional Arita overglaze enamels are applied, and the piece is fired again at 800°C. Because the piece is fired once for each color applied, the creation of a single work involves between four and ten separate firings. The *Somenishiki* (or *Iro-Nabeshima*) style originated around 1675, with pieces initially created as furnishings for the castle or as gifts for the Shogunate, feudal lords, and the Imperial Court. These techniques and traditions have been passed down to the present day.

**The *Iro-Nabeshima* Style**
Wares intended for gifts or personal use by the Nabeshima family of Saga were produced at the domain's official kiln. Pieces created at this kiln are known as "Nabeshima ware" and are highly acclaimed worldwide. As they were commissioned as gifts, the resulting products were of exceptional quality and elegance. It is believed that the official kiln was originally established at Iwataya-gawachi (Arita) during the Kan'ei era (1624–1644), moved to Minami-gawara (Arita) during the Kanbun era (1661–1673), and finally relocated to Okawachi (Imari City) during the Enpō era (1673–1680). While "Nabeshima ware" encompasses celadon and underglaze blue pieces, those featuring overglaze enamel colors are specifically known as "*Iro-Nabeshima*" (Colored Nabeshima). The decoration of *Iro-Nabeshima* is based on four colors: the blue of the underglaze and the red, green, and yellow of the overglaze enamels. The Nabeshima style continues to be preserved today as a decorative technique in Arita ware.

**Paulownia (*Kiri*)**
Since ancient times, the paulownia tree has been considered auspicious. Regarded as a noble tree, it serves—alongside the chrysanthemum—as an emblem of the Imperial Family. In the patterns of Arita and Imari ware, the paulownia tree is traditionally regarded as the perch for the mythical phoenix (*hōō*); consequently, the two are frequently paired to create designs of great elegance and distinction.

*Karakusa* (Arabesque)
The *karakusa* pattern depicts the intertwining vines of a plant. Arita ware features a wide variety of these arabesque designs, ranging from patterns combining vines with flowers, leaves, or fruit—such as chrysanthemum, peony, or paulownia arabesques—to the distinctive *tako-karakusa* (octopus arabesque), so named because the swirling vine motifs resemble the suction cups on an octopus's tentacles. Cherished by all for its perfected beauty as a traditional motif, the arabesque pattern appears frequently on Arita and Imari ware. Because the vines extend endlessly in all directions without interruption, the *karakusa* is considered an auspicious traditional pattern symbolizing longevity and prosperity.
