*Somenishiki* is a traditional Arita ware style characterized by a multi-step process: underglaze blue painting is applied and fired at 1,300°C, followed by the application of traditional Arita overglaze enamels (incorporating colors such as red, green, blue, and yellow) and a second firing at 800°C. Because each color requires a separate firing, a single piece may undergo between four and ten firings before completion. Originating around 1675, *Somenishiki* (specifically the *Iro-Nabeshima* style) was initially created for castle furnishings and as tribute gifts for the Shogunate, feudal lords, and the Imperial Court; these techniques and traditions are preserved to this day.

**Quail (*Uzura*)**
The quail is a migratory bird of the pheasant family, characterized by a round body, a short tail, and reddish-brown plumage speckled with black, yellow, and white. Long a popular subject in crafts and paintings, the quail is a charming, heartwarming, and gentle motif. Because its call sounds like the Japanese phrase *Go-kitchō* (meaning "an auspicious omen"), it is considered a highly lucky symbol that brings good fortune.

**Sparrow (*Suzume*)**
Sparrows are familiar birds that have long been regarded as symbols of abundance. Like the quail, they are a beloved subject in art and crafts, offering a charming and gentle aesthetic. Sparrows are considered auspicious birds that invite good fortune; they are believed to peck away at misfortune and evil, and symbolize a bountiful harvest. They also embody wishes for family prosperity and safety, making them a cherished, lucky motif.

**Peony (*Botan*)**
With its magnificent, large blossoms, the peony exudes a noble air; in China, it has long been known as the "King of Flowers" and a symbol of wealth and honor. In Japan, too, the peony's spectacular beauty has made it a popular design motif across a wide range of art forms and traditional crafts. This is an auspicious pattern that exudes an elegant gentleness amidst its splendor.

Karakusa (Arabesque)
The *karakusa* pattern depicts the intertwining vines of a plant. A wide variety of these patterns appear in Arita ware, ranging from designs that combine vines with flowers, leaves, and fruits—such as chrysanthemum, peony, and paulownia arabesques—to the "octopus arabesque" (*tako-karakusa*), named for its resemblance to the suction cups on an octopus's tentacles. Universally admired for the perfected beauty of its traditional design, this motif has frequently adorned Arita and Imari ware. Because the vines extend endlessly in all directions without interruption, the *karakusa* is considered an auspicious pattern symbolizing longevity and prosperity.
